The UCSF Liver Center (http://livercenter.ucsf.edu) is looking for a career laboratory scientist (specialist) to be the Technical Director of its Cell Biology Core. The Cell Biology Core provides primary liver cells for experimental studies and serves as a source of expertise in procedures that induce liver disease in experimental animals.  The Technical Director will supervise and assist a junior technician who performs daily cell isolations and purifications using a variety of techniques, including density-gradient centrifugation, elutriation, and MACS. S/he will also be the primary scientific and technical contact for clients of the Core and maintain the Core’s quality control, IACUC/BUA protocols and recharge pricing.  S/he will be expected to take the lead in developing new methods and services for the Core (e,g., isolating cells from human liver; perfecting and providing standardized animal models of liver disease). Lastly, the employee will serve as laboratory manager for the Dr. J. Maher, Core Director, whose laboratory studies the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease.  S/he will be fully integrated into the scientific effort of the Maher Lab.
 
Requirements:
Applicants must have a strong background in methods for primary cell isolation, cell separation and cell culture and a willingness to maintain personal expertise in a variety of procedures to either procure liver cells or induce liver disease. 
A background in liver biology is preferred but not mandatory.
Exacting scientific standards and professionalism, as well as outstanding oral and written communication skill, are essential to serve the diverse clientele of the Center.
